Signs of depression

Depression isn’t easy to diagnose. Some people experience a bad feeling after an episode and say or believe they are depressed; depression is more than feeling sad. It impacts an individual’s social, mental, and physical health. If depression isn’t treated, it can grow more severe and sometimes debilitating. Feeling hopeless

People with depression have the burden of feeling hopeless. Sometimes the person may start to feel worthless and guilty. This is where statements like “It’s all my fault” or “What’s the point?” stem from.

Lack of interest

When the things that bring joy to a person’s life stop mattering, it may be a symptom of depression. The person no longer wants to do the things they love, like hobbies, hanging out with friends, or sports. This usually results in withdrawing from social activities and having difficulties with family, school, or work.

Anger and irritability

A person with depression may experience a change in character, especially regarding their tolerance levels. They will become easily irritable and be quick to anger. Everything and everyone will get on their nerves.

Constantly tired

A person may feel tired and want to sleep a lot. Along with a lack of interest comes a lack of energy. Sometimes the person will have insomnia, meaning they can’t rest and recharge, leading to anxiety.

Anxiety

Anxiety is common among those with depression. The person will feel restless, constantly in a sense of flight, have trouble focusing, and tremble, among other symptoms.

Change in appetite and weight

The change can be on the extreme end of a person’s eating habits. They will either overeat and gain weight or eat less and lose weight. The key to determining if it’s a sign of depression is whether the change in eating habits is intentional. If it isn’t intentional, then it may be due to depression.

Reckless behavior

When they experience depression, a person may engage in escapism behavior. They will engage in acts that they believe will take away the feelings they have. This is usually reckless behavior like substance abuse, compulsive gambling, or taking up dangerous sports.

Attitude towards death

Depression is a common cause of suicide. When a person loses interest in life and feels hopeless, they feel like they have no options, even though they do.
